CHAPTER FOURTEEN
RAYO
Successfully maneuvering my way through bumps and potholes, I finally pull over at Triciaâs apartment. I need to clear my head and who else to help if not Tricia. Mabel is the culprit which makes her an impossible option.
Unbuckling my seatbelt, I stare at my reflection in the rearview mirror. I feel different, yet, I donât look different. Nothing seems to have changed, at least not where my physical appearance is concerned. Don't get me wrong, I'm super proud of the woman I'm becoming and my achievements so far. Thing is, I think I get carried away with how far I have come, that I hardly take out time to appreciate myself.
I touch my face with a little powder before stepping out, making my way to Triciaâs apartment. When Tricia sees me at her doorstep, she would flip over. Her expression would be priceless. Sheâs always complaining that I never visit her, even though her place is closer to mine.
âYou are more friends with Mabel than me. It does not hurt me, but please pretend to visit me often.â She had said at one point in time.
The presence of her car in the compound confirms that she is at home. Tricia never goes anywhere on foot and she detests taxis.
The compound is quiet compared to Mabelâs, which had generators blaring on all sides. Had it been one of those days when Richard used to get on my nerves with his incessant loud music, I would have swapped apartments with Tricia. These days however, I look forward to the blast of his home theatre, but it has not happened. Thoughts of him brings a smile to my lips. Itâs amazing what love can turn one into.
Wow! Love? Did I just add love and Richard in the same sentence?
You've been in love since the very first time you set your flirty eyes on him.
No, no, no, no, no. No. No. No. Not happening. Not thinking about it.
I fumble around in my bag for keys. Initially, I was against the idea of sharing keys amongst my girls. I didn't want anyone intruding. Bashing into my privacy unannounced. Now that I think of it, it's not such a bad idea after all.
Triciaâs front door opens with just one twist of the key. Thatâs unusual, she usually double-lock her door.
"Babes?" I call out, scrutinizing her apartment as I take off my shoes. I make myself comfortable on her settee. It envelops my tired body and I sigh in comfort. Triciaâs apartment has a homey feel. Probably due to her maternal instinct. Her space is bursting with vivid colors of nature. Plants decorate her bookshelf which carries more plants than books.
I move to pick her TV remote control but stop in my tracks as my ears pick on sounds coming from her bedroom. Oh no. My initial fear that something is not right seems true. I race into her kitchen to look for a weapon. Anything would work.
No, not a knife. I canât stand blood. Not after my experience at Mabelâs.
